Born as an experiment from the Hidden Village of Sand, Gaara was combined with the spirit of a demonic sand priest known as Shukaku, not unlike Naruto and the Nine Tails. Gaara grew up without knowing love. For a long time he tought being spoiled equals love, but when he met Rock Lee that opinion changed.

Unfortunately, Gaara became unstable around the age of six years. Consequently, his father, Kazakage, ordered numerous assassination attempts upon him, all failing miserably. This betrayal caused Gaara to become hateful and deeply suspicious of everyone, including his siblings, who he regarded as "lumps of meat linked together by hatred and murderous intent."

The tattoo on Gaara's forehead means love, which combined with his name means, "I Love Death." Since he only feels alive when he kills, he believes that killing is his reason for being.

The middle child of Kazekage, Kankuro's siblings are Gaara and Temari. He has a deep fear of Gaara, and is very submissive to his will. When Gaara isn't around, however, Kankuro is a very confident bully, and has the ability to back up his attitude.

Kankuro carries around a puppet he calls Karasu, and employs it when fighting. Karasu has many weapons hidden inside it, from sharp knives to hidden bombs of poison gas; it is exceedingly difficult to get close enough to damage Karasu.

He may seem like he is all talk, but it would be foolish to underestimate him, as he is quite intelligent in his battles. His only weakness is that if Karasu is destroyed, Kankuro has no way of fighting back, so he takes exceptionally good care of his puppet to insure that he will not be stranded in battle.

Yashamaru is the care taker and only friend of Gaara. He was ordered by Kazekage to look after Gaara and to protect him as well (as if Gaara needs any protection …). Yashamaru gets hurt when defending little kid’s from Gaara. Yashamaru’s sister was the mother of Gaara, and because of the curse Gaara has embedded in him, Yashmaru’s sisters’ life had to be sacrificed for the curse to work.

This protector of Gaara also explains that flesh wounds may hurt but they are easy to heal and medicine will speed up the process of healing. The other kinds of wounds are wounds inside your heart. Some may heal over time, some of them will last a lifetime. The only thing that can heal the wound of the heart is love. The caretaker tells Gaara that he has received this love from his (Yashamaru’s) sister. He thinks that the sand protecting Gaara is the love of the mother.

Yashamaru is later ordered by Kazekage to kill Gaara as he is getting out of hand. He shows up in a face cover and attacks Gaara in the back. Of course the sand protects Gaara and he defeats Yashamaru with minimal effort. Gaara removes the face cover to realize his attacker was his only friend, Yashamaru.

The ninja of the sand explains that although on the surface he tried to like Gaara, deep down he has always hated him. Yashamaru opens his jacket to reveal about 20 burn notes on his chest which catch on fire. His finals words are: “This is it. Please die.”

The eldest child on Gaara's team, Temari, as well as Kankuro, is terrified of Gaara, her youngest brother. When Gaara is away, she is a confident, strong Genin, although not a bully like Kankuro. Despite her fear for Gaara, she can be caring towards him, but only if Gaara isn't riled up.

She has a deep dislike for war, and shows it when her teacher Baki told them their mission to Hidden Leaf for the Chuunin exams. Despite her dislike, besides Gaara, she has the strongest offense. Her enormous fan can execute a Slashing Wind attack, which can take on groups of enemies, and equally effective in a duel. She thinks ahead, like Shikamaru, to better suit her abilities.
